Students who sustain a concussion may find themselves out of school for a number of days, they miss instruction, they feel physically unwell when they return to the classroom and they are cognitively unavailable to learn. For this reason and more, the Get Schooled on Concussions was developed.
The Get Schooled on Concussions for Missouri (Password TACTmissouri2022) program provides evidence-based academic adjustments that teachers may use to support any concussed students in returning to learn.
How does it work?
School nurses, counselors, teachers, administrators, or other school personnel answer a few questions about student’s symptoms, age, time of year, and teachers’ emails on the Concussion website. The teachers then receive an email with ready to use academic adjustments that are developed by a school counselor and neuropsychologist. The suggestions may be implemented before an IEP or 504 Plan is needed. The teacher receives an email for a four week period with modifications to the suggestions based on the assumption the student is recovering “normally” from the concussion. Most concussions are resolved within 7 to 10 days. The emails may be cancelled when no longer needed by the teacher to support the student. The Brain Injury Association of Missouri (BIA-MO) and their partners cover the subscription fee so there is no cost to schools for the Get Schooled on Concussions resources.
Show Me the TACT
School districts have the opportunity to receive assistance from a Get Schooled on Concussions for Missouri Task Force Member. This assistance includes a walk-through of the process of implementing the Teacher Acute Concussion Tool (TACT). This is done via an online or phone meeting to discuss the needs of the school district related to concussions and “hand holding” to use the TACT when a concussed student returns to school. There is no cost to school districts for this assistance.
